Exploring Bratislava: Castle, Old Town and Coronation Route with a Guide

Slovakia's capital is compact, lively and full of history: what to see on a Bratislava shore excursion.

The short answer: In Bratislava, see the castle above the Danube, St. Martin's Cathedral where Hungarian kings were crowned, Michael's Gate and the old town lanes with their palaces. Two to three hours cover the highlights, half a day if you add Devín Castle or a food tasting. Bratislava is at its best from April to October and during Advent.

Top Sights in Bratislava

Bratislava is the capital of Slovakia and lies only about 40 miles (60 km) from Vienna, making them the two closest capitals in Europe. Known as Pressburg, the city was the capital of the Kingdom of Hungary from 1536 to 1783. Cruise ships dock right at the edge of the old town.

Bratislava Castle

The castle with its four corner towers sits on a hill above the river and is the city's landmark. From its terrace you can see across the Danube to Austria and Hungary.

St. Martin's Cathedral and the Coronation Route

Between 1563 and 1830, Hungarian kings and queens were crowned in this Gothic cathedral, among them Maria Theresa. A gilded replica of the Hungarian crown on top of the spire recalls this role. Brass crowns set into the pavement mark the coronation route through the old town.

Old Town and Michael's Gate

Michael's Gate is the only surviving city gate. Around it you will find the Main Square with the Old Town Hall, the Primate's Palace where the Peace of Pressburg was signed in 1805, and plenty of cafes. Quirky bronze statues such as "Čumil", peeking out of a manhole, are favorite photo spots.

New Bridge and Devín Castle

The Bridge of the Slovak National Uprising, with its observation tower nicknamed the "UFO", shapes the skyline. Just outside town, the ruins of Devín Castle overlook the meeting of the Morava and Danube rivers, where the Iron Curtain ran until 1989.

How Much Time Do You Need?

  • 2 to 3 hours: old town, St. Martin's Cathedral and the climb to the castle.
  • Half a day: add a tasting of Slovak specialties or a walk through hidden courtyards.
  • Full day: a hike or bike ride to Devín Castle along the former Iron Curtain.

Best Time to Visit

From April to October the old town's sidewalk cafes are open and Bratislava shows its lively side. Summer brings many open air events. During Advent, Christmas markets on the Main Square and Franciscan Square offer hot punch and Slovak treats. Since many ships stay only a few hours, a well planned route pays off.

Shore Excursion Tips

  • Euros work: Slovakia uses the euro, and cards are accepted almost everywhere.
  • Carry your passport: Even within the Schengen area, bring a valid passport.
  • Climb to the castle: The path is short but steep, and the view is worth every step.
  • Taste Slovakia: Bryndzové halušky, small dumplings with sheep cheese, and wines from the Little Carpathians are classics.
