The short answer: In Budapest, see the Castle District with Matthias Church and Fisherman's Bastion on the Buda side, the Parliament and St. Stephen's Basilica on the Pest side, and the Chain Bridge in between. Half a day covers the highlights, a full day adds the baths, the Jewish Quarter and the Great Market Hall. Budapest is lovely from April to October, and the illuminated Danube at night is magical year round.
Top Sights in Budapest
Budapest was created in 1873 by uniting Buda, Óbuda and Pest. The Danube banks, the Castle District and Andrássy Avenue are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Most cruise ships dock on the Pest side, just a few minutes' walk from downtown.
Castle District, Matthias Church and Fisherman's Bastion
On Castle Hill in Buda you will find the Royal Palace, Matthias Church with its colorful tiled roof and the fairy tale turrets of Fisherman's Bastion. From here you get the best view of the Parliament across the river.
Parliament
The neo-Gothic Parliament on the riverbank is one of the largest parliament buildings in Europe. Inside, the Holy Crown of Hungary is kept on display.
Chain Bridge and St. Stephen's Basilica
The Chain Bridge was the first permanent bridge between Buda and Pest and opened in 1849. St. Stephen's Basilica is exactly as tall as the Parliament, and no downtown building is meant to rise above the two.
Thermal Baths, Jewish Quarter and Market Hall
Budapest is famous for its thermal springs, for example at the Széchenyi or Gellért baths. The Jewish Quarter is home to the Dohány Street Synagogue, the largest in Europe. The "Shoes on the Danube Bank" memorial honors victims of the Holocaust. The Great Market Hall sells paprika, salami and lángos.
How Much Time Do You Need?
- 3 to 4 hours: Castle District with Fisherman's Bastion, Parliament views and the Chain Bridge.
- Full day: add St. Stephen's Basilica, the Jewish Quarter and the market hall or a thermal bath.
- A day before or after your cruise: time for Gellért Hill, Andrássy Avenue and an evening river cruise.
Best Time to Visit
From April to October the weather is pleasant for long walks, though summer can be hot. The thermal baths are especially enjoyable on cool days and in winter. During Advent, Christmas markets fill Vörösmarty Square and the square in front of St. Stephen's Basilica. Sailing into Budapest at night, past the illuminated Parliament, is one of the most memorable moments of any Danube cruise.
Shore Excursion Tips
- Forint or card: Hungary's currency is the forint. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, but a few forints help for small purchases.
- Ride up the hill: A funicular and buses climb Castle Hill, saving your energy for the walk.
- Pack a swimsuit: If you want to visit a thermal bath, bring swimwear and flip flops.
- Enjoy the night views: If your ship stays overnight, stroll along the river when the castle, bridges and Parliament light up.

Is one day enough for Budapest?
For the highlights on both sides of the Danube, yes. For baths, museums and neighborhoods beyond the center, plan an extra day.
Where do ships dock in Budapest?
Usually on the Pest side between Liberty Bridge and the Parliament, just a few minutes' walk from downtown.
Can I visit a thermal bath on a shore excursion?
Yes. With half a day or a full day, a bath pairs well with a walking tour, and your guide can help you choose the right one.
