Linz Shore Excursion: Old Town, Pöstlingberg and the Danube with a Guide

Linz is an underrated Danube cruise port: what to see on a shore excursion and which day trips start here.

The short answer: On a Linz shore excursion, see the Main Square with its Trinity Column, the old town, the New Cathedral and the Pöstlingberg hill with its view over the Danube. Two to three hours cover the old town and cathedral, about four hours if you add the Pöstlingberg. Linz is at its best from May to September, when the riverfront is lively.

Top Sights in Linz

Linz is the capital of Upper Austria and the country's third largest city. Cruise ships dock right on the riverfront, just a few minutes' walk from downtown. The city has reinvented itself from industrial hub to cultural center: it was European Capital of Culture in 2009 and has been a UNESCO City of Media Arts since 2014.

Main Square and Old Town

The vast Hauptplatz is one of the largest historic squares in Austria, with the Trinity Column at its center. In the old town you will find the Landhaus where Johannes Kepler taught, Renaissance courtyards and the castle above the river.

New Cathedral

The neo-Gothic Mariendom is Austria's largest church by capacity. Its colorful stained glass windows depict scenes from faith and local history.

Pöstlingberg

The Pöstlingberg railway runs from the Main Square up the city's own hill and is one of the steepest adhesion railways in the world. At the top you will find a pilgrimage basilica, the Grottenbahn fairy tale ride and sweeping views over the city.

Ars Electronica and Lentos

On the riverbank stand the Ars Electronica Center, a museum of art, technology and society, and the Lentos Art Museum. At night their facades glow in changing colors, a beautiful sight from the ship.

How Much Time Do You Need?

  • 2 to 3 hours: Main Square, old town and cathedral on foot.
  • 4 hours: add a ride up the Pöstlingberg or a food tasting.
  • Full day: a trip to Salzburg or Český Krumlov, or a bike ride on the Danube Cycle Path.

Best Time to Visit

From May to September the riverfront is busy, and in September the Ars Electronica Festival and the Linz Klangwolke sound and light show take over the city. During Advent there are Christmas markets on the Main Square and in the Volksgarten. Many cruises arrive in Linz in the morning, so a morning excursion with lunch back on board works well.

Shore Excursion Tips

  • Try Linzer Torte: The famous cake with red currant jam is sold in old town pastry shops.
  • Ride up, walk down: If you have time, take the railway up the Pöstlingberg and stroll back into town.
  • Enjoy the evening light: If your ship stays late, take an evening walk by the river when the museums light up.
  • Plan day trips early: Full day tours to Salzburg or Český Krumlov are popular, so reserve in good time.
