Krems Shore Excursion: Göttweig Abbey Above the Danube
The 'Austrian Montecassino' at the end of the Wachau

- Duration
- 3.5 hours
- Group
- up to 25 people
- Languages
- German, English, French, Italian, Spanish
This private shore excursion takes you from the Krems river dock up to the Benedictine abbey of Göttweig, enthroned high above the Danube valley. You see Baroque state rooms, the Imperial Staircase and one of the finest views over the Wachau.
Göttweig was founded in 1083 and, because of its hilltop location, is often compared to Montecassino in Italy. After a fire in 1718, Abbot Gottfried Bessel had the abbey redesigned in Baroque style, a project never fully completed but still overwhelming in scale.
Your guide leads you up the Imperial Staircase with its ceiling fresco by Paul Troger, through the abbey church and onto the terrace overlooking Krems, Stein and the Danube. Göttweig is also a winery, and you hear how wine and monastery have belonged together for centuries.
This private shore excursion is planned around your ship's schedule. Your guide keeps an eye on the clock so you are back on board relaxed and on time.
