Melk Shore Excursion: Melk Abbey and Old TownHighlightsWachau
Duration
3.0 hours

This private shore excursion takes you from the Melk river dock up to Melk Abbey, one of the most famous Baroque monasteries in the world. Afterward there is time for the small old town at the foot of the abbey rock before you head back on board.

Benedictine monks have lived on the rock above the Danube since 1089, and in the 18th century Jakob Prandtauer rebuilt their monastery as a Baroque masterpiece. Its golden-yellow facade is visible from the ship and marks the start of the Wachau valley.

Your guide shows you the Imperial Corridor, the Marble Hall, the terrace with Danube views, the famous library and the splendid abbey church. You hear about monastic life then and now and learn why Melk appears in Umberto Eco's novel 'The Name of the Rose'.

This private shore excursion is planned around your ship's schedule. Your guide keeps an eye on the clock so you are back on board relaxed and on time.
