This private tour shows you Mautern on the Danube, across the river from Krems, where the Roman fort of Favianis once guarded the Danube frontier. In the 5th century St. Severin worked here, and the account of his life is a unique record of late Roman times.
The Romans built a chain of forts along the Danube, the Limes, which since 2021 has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site 'Frontiers of the Roman Empire'. In Mautern towers and wall remains of the Favianis fort are still part of the townscape.
Severin arrived in a time of upheaval, helped the population against famine and raids and founded a monastery here. Your guide connects the traces in town with the Roman museum and tells how a border post grew into a town at the entrance to the Wachau.
This is a private tour: just your own group, your pace and plenty of time for questions. Our licensed guides are happy to adjust the focus to your interests before the day.
