This private tour shows you Pöchlarn on the Danube, birthplace of the painter Oskar Kokoschka and the Bechelaren of the Nibelungenlied epic. The small town west of Melk brings together modern art and medieval legend.
In the Nibelungenlied, Bechelaren is the seat of Margrave Rüdiger, who hosts the Burgundians on their way to the court of Etzel. Pöchlarn keeps this tradition alive, and a monument on the riverbank recalls the famous heroic epic.
Oskar Kokoschka was born in Pöchlarn in 1886, and his birthplace now hosts changing exhibitions on his work. Your guide tells of his path from Viennese enfant terrible to world-class artist and shows you the town square, the parish church and remains of the town walls on the river.
This is a private tour: just your own group, your pace and plenty of time for questions. Our licensed guides are happy to adjust the focus to your interests before the day.
