This tour takes you on foot out of the old town and up to Veste Oberhaus. Between woodland paths and viewpoints, you will learn why the fortress watched over Passau for centuries, with views of the Three Rivers City opening up along the way.

The route

  1. Town Hall Square
    Meeting point, with a short look back at the fortress's building history.
  2. Ilzstadt
    Through the fishing quarter at the foot of the hill the fortress stands on.
  3. Ascent path
    A steeper stretch through woodland, with the first views over the Inn and Danube.
  4. Viewpoint stop
    A break at one of the lookout points partway up.
  5. Veste Oberhaus
    Arrival at the fortress, with sweeping views over the whole old town.
  6. Three Rivers Corner from above
    A view down onto where the Danube, Inn and Ilz meet.
  7. Descent
    The way back into the old town on an alternative route with further views.

How steep is the path up to Veste Oberhaus?

The path climbs noticeably over long stretches and includes steps as well as unpaved sections. A moderate level of fitness is enough, but sturdy footwear is important.

What footwear and gear are recommended?

Closed, sturdy shoes with good grip are recommended, ideally weatherproof if rain is expected. Bring water, and rain protection if needed.
