This hike takes you on foot along the Danube to the ruined castle of Devín, perched high above the point where the Danube meets the Morava river. An outing for nature lovers that combines a historic site with landscape and fresh air.

The route

  1. Starting point in Bratislava
    meeting point and the first stretch along the Danube bank.
  2. Riverside path towards the Morava confluence
    walking along the Danube with views over the water.
  3. Confluence of the Danube and Morava
    experiencing the historic border between west and east up close.
  4. Climb up to Devín Castle
    the path leads uphill to the ruin above the confluence.
  5. Devín Castle ruin
    time to explore and take in the view over both rivers.
  6. Return
    on foot back to Bratislava, or by public transport, depending on what's arranged.

How long is the hike and how much elevation gain is involved?

The hike covers several kilometres, mostly flat along the river, with a short but noticeable climb only at the final ascent to the castle ruin itself. Overall it's manageable for anyone with a normal level of fitness.

How do we get back to Bratislava afterwards?

Depending on preference and group size, we either walk back or use public transport for the return leg. We'll discuss this with you in advance.

Can this hike also work as a day trip from Vienna?

Yes, you travel to Bratislava by hydrofoil or train and still have plenty of time for the hike to Devín Castle and back before returning to Vienna the same day.
